چکیده

This paper discusses parametric, nonparametric, and semiparametric models of urban growth. To illustrate differences across approaches, we test Gibrat's law in the long run, using three methods different datasets: Spanish capital cities regions (1900–2011, annual data) US MSAs (1900–2000, decennial data). Our results reveal that estimation relationship between growth initial size can significantly vary methods. We suggest encourage use future research • Gibrat’s run Three datasets are considered: regions, MSAs. The estimated

How Elastic is Calorie Demand? Parametric, Nonparametric, and Semiparametric Results for Urban Papua New Guinea

This paper seeks further evidence on the elasticity of calorie demand with respect to household resources. The case presented is for urban areas of Papua New Guinea, where just over one-half of the population appear to obtain less than the recommended amount of dietary energy. The relationship between per capita calorie consumption and per capita expenditure in urban areas of Papua New Guinea i...

Local Identification of Nonparametric and Semiparametric Models∗

In parametric models a sufficient condition for local identification is that the vector of moment conditions is differentiable at the true parameter with full rank derivative matrix. We show that additional conditions are often needed in nonlinear, nonparametric models to avoid nonlinearities overwhelming linear effects. We give restrictions on a neighborhood of the true value that are sufficie...

Endogeneity in Nonparametric and Semiparametric Regression Models

This paper considers the nonparametric and semiparametric methods for estimating regression models with continuous endogenous regressors. We list a number of different generalizations of the linear structural equation model, and discuss how three common estimation approaches for linear equations — the “instrumental variables,” “fitted value,” and “control function” approaches — may or may not b...

Semiparametric regression models with additive nonparametric components and high dimensional parametric components

This paper concerns semiparametric regression models with additive nonparametric components and high dimensional parametric components under sparsity assumptions. To achieve simultaneous model selection for both nonparametric and parametric parts, we introduce a penalty that combines the adaptive empirical L2-norms of the nonparametric component functions and the SCAD penalty on the coefficient...
